On September 1-3 2019, Ogaden Youth and Student Union (OYSU) held its 4th international conference in Jigjiga, Somali Region where Cumar Sheikh Abdullahi was elected as chairman. Conference participants included ONLF leaders, civil society groups, distinguished delegates and other invited guests. The purpose of the conference was to elect a new OYSU leader, re-visit the organisational set up and rules governing OYSU, and to create a work plan that will determine the organisations’s activities for the coming 3 years.
This global conference marks the first conference that OYSU held inside the Somali Region- and with that came the opportunity to bring together diverse set of youth from across the globe, meanwhile strengthening solidarity between local and diaspora youth. Together, youth delegates strategised on the future of the organisation in light of the rapid political shifts that Ethiopia has undergone in the past year.
The conference concluded with a sense of renewed commitment towards achieving the goals set out in OYSU’s mission and vision, namely to advocate for, and champion the rights of Somali people in Ethiopia.
