Ogaden and German Awareness Week
On September 9, 2017 OYSU Germany held an outreach event in Würzburg, Germany. The purpose of the event was to strengthen the relationship between Germans and Ogaden-Germans. The event consisted of an education session and an entertainment session. OYSU Germany members handed out educational material that explained how the Ethiopian government has systematically marginalized, oppressed, and deliberately isolated Ogaden from the rest of the world. OYSU members educated the public on the widespread massacres, rape, torture, and arbitrary arrests of Ogaden civilians in Ethiopia. OYSU members also provided a call to action of how Germans can aide in raising awareness about the humanitarian crisis in the Ogaden.
In addition, OYSU Germany in collaboration with Hilaac Qaran band provided entertainment in the form of traditional Dhanto and Somali songs. The event ended with a meeting with Dr. Müller, the Mayor of Würzburg. OYSU members were able to voice their concerns to Dr. Müller and brainstorm effective ways OYSU could partner with the government and other youth organizations in Germany.
